Over the past few decades, biodiversity has plummeted and continues to fall in the Netherlands, despite many State-funded conservation and restoration programmes.
The Netherlands is one of the world’s most densely populated countries. It also has a sprawling, highly intensive farming sector. One of the key reasons behind the country’s decline in biodiversity is the very sharp fall it experienced in the quantity and quality of its hedges and trees. Yet the soil in the Netherlands is extremely favourable to tree-planting. With this in mind, former planter and co-founder of the Heg&Landschap association has taken to the Dutch countryside to convince farmers and groups (land owners, estate management bodies and local organisations) to replant trees on their land. Children are encouraged to do their bit too, and every year, schools devote an entire day to planting trees.
