Regenerating soil and erecting a green wall to protect against sand storms
The Inner Mongolia region is suffering from desertification and sand storms. Every spring, violent winds whip particles of sand into the air and bear down on local dwellings, causing communities to flee. Once a luscious prairie, the Kulun Qi desert is now at the front-line of global warming and excessive land use.
The ‘Roots & Shoots’ educational programme launched by the Jane Goodall Institute brings together young people from around the world and shows them the impact of humans on our planet. In China, the ‘Roots & Shoots Shanghai’ programme received the Yves Rocher Foundation’s support in 2011 for its Million Tree project. Working with farmers and local residents, the project aimed to plant and care for trees. This, in turn, enabled local students to measure the trees’ ecological impact and create a database designed to foster the project’s long-term development.
