Planting local tree varieties to create an ecosystem in harmony with the Aboriginal way of life

In Australia, the commercial timber sector and fast-paced pasturing have led to deforestation that severely threatens the many species that live here

PROJECT COMPLETED

In Australia, the commercial timber sector and fast-paced pasturing have destroyed forestland in the last few decades. The deforestation involved severely threatens the many species that live here, and conflicts with the Aboriginal way of life that seeks harmonious communion between humans and the earth’s natural cycles.
Working within the framework of the National Trust of Australia, the Australian government’s cultural heritage safeguarding programme, the Aborna Foundation, intends to reconcile companies’ economic development requirements with the need to respect natural habitats and restore indigenous peoples’ ways of life.
Aborna and its partners, including the Yves Rocher Foundation, thus planted several hectares of local plant species across the Walitj estate in south-west Australia. This project is enabling Aborigines to return to a way of life that reflects their culture, and to practice eco-friendly farming processes while boosting their income.
