Fonds pour l’Arbre
An endowment fund co-created by the Yves Rocher Foundation and Afac-Agroforesteries
Without the hedges, the birds disappear, the rivers dry up, the soils are less fertile, the farmers will no longer be able to feed us. The entire biodiversity of our territories is threatened. Since the meeting between Jacques Rocher and Sylvie Monier, member of Afac-Agroforesteries and winner of the Terre de Femmes Prize, the Yves Rocher Foundation has become aware of this vital issue and has decided to act.
Result: in 11 years, 5 million trees have been planted in France with the support of 18,000 people. Today, faced with the emergency, we have decided to join forces by creating alongside Afac-Agroforesteries a new structure, the Fonds pour l'Arbre, which brings together more patrons to bring together a change of scale and deploy ever more hedges in France.
Plant
More than 11,500 km of hedges disappear every year. Our campaigns are dying. In order to bring them back to life, one of the major actions of the Fonds pour l’Arbre is to support and favor the development of territorial local plant sectors so that operators can obtain supplies of quality seedlings. Objective: plant more than 750,000 km of hedges by 2050, thanks to a network of local actors involved in this major project throughout France.
Restore
Faced with the incessant disappearance of hedges, planting is no longer enough. This is why the Fonds pour l’Arbre also carries out important diagnostic and advisory actions to support farmers in the sustainable management of hedges thanks to the Label Haies. Sustainable management is essential in order to strengthen the resilience of our territories. We are therefore working to preserve the 750,000 km of existing hedgerows, hand in hand with local operators.
Carry
In recent decades, the aging of hedges (little renewal) and poor maintenance practices (excessive mechanical management of hedges) have taken over from more nature-friendly techniques, causing the disappearance of hedges in France. The third major action of the Fonds pour l'Arbre is therefore to support hedge managers, by supporting territorial organizations acting in favor of hedges and by training them in agroforestry techniques using tools such as the Hedge Label or the Sustainable Hedge Management Plan.
The strength of the collective
" The key to success ? Combine the financial support of private sponsors with a national network close to actors in the field, with the ambition of a real public policy around the hedge and the sustainability of our agricultural systems. It is together, by each doing our part, that we can move forward. It's possible. We've been doing it for 30 years! » Jacques Rocher, President of the Yves Rocher Foundation.
Today, the Fonds pour l’Arbre already brings together more than 10 patrons and displays a strong ambition! Double its financing capacity within 3 years. Concretely, this represents 3,000 farmers supported, 6,000 km of hedges managed sustainably with the Haie Label, 950 km of hedges planted across France, including 50% in Local Plants in all regions.
