Integrated rehabilitation of the EwasoNgiro ecosystem in the Samburu National Reserve in northern Nairobi
In 2007, Jacques Rocher met WangariMaathai, the first African woman to be awarded the Nobel Peace Prize, in Nairobi. Then and there, he promised her that he would plant 1 million trees through the Yves Rocher Foundation. Since then, this goal has largely been accomplished, and a planting project in Kenya was kick-started in 2011 with the Green Belt Movement (GBM). The goal was to fund seedlings and the work carried out by local nursery growers tasked with reforesting the Kirisia Forest Watersheds in northern Nairobi’s Samburu National Reserve, which were threatened with deforestation. Local women are tasked with this project, planting seedlings and managing the nurseries. The idea is to change the relationship women have with the land, to modify their status and allow them to fully exercise their rights. GBM was created by WangariMaathai in 1977 to plant and protect trees in Africa.
