The Yves Rocher Foundation, Afac-Agroforesteries and around ten other sponsors have joined forces within the Tree Fund to bring hedgerows back across the French landscape
This new endowment fund is supported by 90 organisations that have been active across all regions for many years. Each year, it also engages more than 2,000 farmers and local authorities. All of them share a common ambition: to bring hedgerows back to life in France.
The goal of the Tree Fund? To plant and restore over 750,000 km of hedgerows across the country by 2050.
What role do hedgerows play in our countryside?
The disappearance of birds, drying rivers, increasingly depleted soils… Our countryside is on the verge of becoming a green desert. Climate change is one of the culprits, but so is another silent threat: the relentless disappearance of hedgerows.
Since 1950, 70% of France’s hedgerows have vanished, and each year, over 11,500 km continue to disappear. As a result, farmers are finding it harder to protect their crops, livestock and land. Our landscapes are losing their charm, and local biodiversity is under serious threat.
Why is it important to take action?
This is a vital issue, and it concerns us all. In response to this urgency, we are joining forces to roll out hedgerows across the country with the creation of the Tree Fund. Together, we must protect this exceptional natural heritage through sustainable management. But we must also replenish the tree cover by planting millions of field trees each year, without compromising on quality.
The future of our rural landscapes, and with them, our own future and that of generations to come, depends on it.
We need your support to raise awareness of this crucial environmental cause. It’s hedge-sential!
