data-path-to-node=\"6\"><span data-path-to-node=\"6,0\">They cool our streets, shelter incredible biodiversity, improve air quality, make our cities more pleasant to live in, and build community Yet, urban green spaces remain insufficient<\/span><span data-path-to-node=\"6,4\">.<\/span><\/p><p id=\"p-rc_c14c09dfea5988f9-54\" data-path-to-node=\"7\"><span data-path-to-node=\"7,0\">That is why, this year, the theme of our Award is <b data-path-to-node=\"7,0\" data-index-in-node=\"50\">&#8220;Trees in the City&#8221;<\/b><\/span><span data-path-to-node=\"7,2\">.<\/span><span style=\"background-color: inherit; letter-spacing: 0em;\">\u00a0<\/span><\/p><p id=\"p-rc_c14c09dfea5988f9-55\" data-path-to-node=\"8\"><span data-path-to-node=\"8,0\">For the first time in human history, more than half of the world&#8217;s population lives in cities<\/span><span data-path-to-node=\"8,2\">. According to current projections, two-thirds of humanity could be living in urban areas by 2050<\/span><span data-path-to-node=\"8,4\">.<\/span><\/p><p id=\"p-rc_c14c09dfea5988f9-56\" data-path-to-node=\"9\"><span data-path-to-node=\"9,0\">Cities are therefore major levers in mitigating climate change<\/span><span data-path-to-node=\"9,2\">. While they can be a source of solutions, they are simultaneously particularly vulnerable to the adverse effects of climate change<\/span><span data-path-to-node=\"9,4\">. Trees sit at the crossroads of these two realities<\/span><span data-path-to-node=\"9,6\">.<\/span><\/p><p id=\"p-rc_c14c09dfea5988f9-57\" data-path-to-node=\"10\"><span data-path-to-node=\"10,0\">Indeed, in cities and their outskirts, trees are becoming scarce<\/span><span data-path-to-node=\"10,2\">.<\/span><\/p><p id=\"p-rc_c14c09dfea5988f9-58\" data-path-to-node=\"11\"><strong>According to UN-Habitat (2024), the global average share of urban green space dropped from 19.5% in 1990 to 13.9% in 2020 \u2014 representing a relative decline of around 29% over 30 years.<\/strong><span style=\"background-color: inherit; letter-spacing: 0em;\">\u00a0<\/span><\/p><p id=\"p-rc_c14c09dfea5988f9-59\" data-path-to-node=\"12\"><span data-path-to-node=\"12,0\">River and coastal flooding, heat stress, extreme rainfall, droughts, urban heat islands, water scarcity, and increased air pollution are just some of the impacts already observed<\/span><span data-path-to-node=\"12,2\">.<\/span><\/p>\t\t\t\t\t\t<\/div>\n\t\t\t\t<\/div>\n\t\t\t\t<div class=\"elementor-element elementor-element-a32ede4 elementor-widget elementor-widget-heading\" data-id=\"a32ede4\" data-element_type=\"widget\" data-widget_type=\"heading.default\">\n\t\t\t\t<div class=\"elementor-widget-container\">\n\t\t\t<h3 class=\"elementor-heading-title elementor-size-default\">\ud83d\udcdd Trees in the city: allies for life<\/h3>\t\t<\/div>\n\t\t\t\t<\/div>\n\t\t\t\t<div class=\"elementor-element elementor-element-0bbe450 elementor-widget elementor-widget-text-editor\" data-id=\"0bbe450\" data-element_type=\"widget\" data-widget_type=\"text-editor.default\">\n\t\t\t\t<div class=\"elementor-widget-container\">\n\t\t\t\t\t\t\t<p id=\"p-rc_c14c09dfea5988f9-60\" data-path-to-node=\"15\"><span data-path-to-node=\"15,0\">It goes without saying that trees and urban green spaces in general significantly improve quality of life by mitigating environmental stressors such as high temperatures, noise pollution, and poor air quality, whilst simultaneously promoting health and social well-being<\/span><span data-path-to-node=\"15,2\">.<\/span><\/p><p id=\"p-rc_c14c09dfea5988f9-61\" data-path-to-node=\"16\"><span data-path-to-node=\"16,0\">A global study of 806 cities showed, for instance, that every 10% increase in tree canopy reduces ambient temperature by approximately 0.3\u00b0C* <a href=\"https:\/\/www.wri.org\/insights\/urban-trees-cooling-potential\">World Resources Institute<\/a>\u00a0<\/span><span data-path-to-node=\"16,2\">.<\/span><\/p><div class=\"source-inline-chip-container luminous-sources hide-from-message-actions ng-star-inserted\">\u00a0<\/div><p id=\"p-rc_c14c09dfea5988f9-62\" data-path-to-node=\"17\"><span data-path-to-node=\"17,0\">Ensuring the presence of trees in our cities is crucial to making them sustainably liveable and resilient for humans and more-than-humans alike<\/span><span
